My Experience Teaching at the Curaçao Dolphin Therapy & Research Center

There are places in the world where healing doesn’t feel forced or clinical — it feels alive. Curaçao’s Dolphin Therapy & Research Center (CDTC) is one of those rare places where the turquoise water, warm Caribbean breeze, and the gentle presence of dolphins create a space where families can exhale, reconnect, and rediscover hope.

On December 4th, 2025, I had the honour of joining CDTC’s talented therapy team to share one of the pillars of my work: Mindful Communication — the art of slowing down, noticing more, and using language in a way that nurtures emotional connection and confidence.

Where Science, Heart, and Nature Intersect

CDTC has earned global recognition for its immersive 2 week therapeutic programs that support individuals with autism, developmental differences, motor challenges, trauma, and emotional regulation needs. Families travel from around the world because the environment here is unlike anything else:

  • Therapy happens in a natural ocean lagoon, not a fluorescent-lit room.
  • The dolphins are part of the team — steady, calm, exquisitely attuned.
  • Parents are active partners.
  • Every session blends evidence-informed therapeutic strategies with genuine emotional engagement.

Bringing Mindful Guide Consulting to CDTC

During my workshop with the therapists, we explored how declarative language and mindful communication strategies can enhance already powerful dolphin-assisted sessions. The team was deeply receptive, reflective, and beautifully aligned with relationship-based work.

Here’s a glimpse of what we covered

Creating Safety Through Declarative Language

Declarative language shifts the focus from performance to connection. It sounds like:

  • “I’m noticing the water feels cooler today…”
  • “I’m wondering what our dolphin friend will do next…”
  • “Oh, this dolphin is your friend”

Instead of prompting or correcting, we invite.
Invitation builds trust.
Trust builds participation.
Participation builds growth.

Moving From Testing to Sharing

We talked about letting go of the subtle “prove it” energy that creeps into traditional therapy. Instead, the goal is:

  • Shared noticing
  • Co-experiencing
  • Modelling curiosity rather than demanding answers

This aligns naturally with dolphin-assisted therapy — the dolphins themselves never “test.” They engage.

Helping Children Build an Inner Voice

Many children who have neurodevelopmental differences don’t intuitively develop the self-talk that supports problem-solving. By modelling our thoughts aloud:

  • “I’m thinking the towels might be over here…”
  • “I’m not sure… let me slow down and figure it out.”
  • “It takes a little bit of time to learn to guide the dolphins, we can start slowly swimming next to them or feeding them”

…we plant the seeds of emotional regulation and flexible thinking.

Strengthening Perspective Taking

As therapists shared stories of their sessions, it was evident they already value the child’s viewpoint. Declarative language helps widen that ability:

  • “I notice our dolphin is waiting.”
  • “I see your face is telling me that you think this is fun…”

It turns moments into meaning.

The Dolphins as Co-Regulators

One of the most beautiful aspects of CDTC is how naturally the dolphins support mindful guiding:

  • Their calm rhythm encourages slower pacing, reducing overwhelm.
  • Their curiosity invites spontaneous engagement.
  • Their responsiveness helps children practice visual referencing — a central component of dynamic growth.
  • Their gentle presence reinforces emotional connection without pressure.

I watched a child learn to give a command to a dolphin in the water. The dolphin approached slowly, already a motivated apprentice, to see what non-verbal gesture the child would offer. No pressure. Just attunement.

The student experienced a sense of agency and autonomy as they experienced their ability to effectively guide the dolphins.  That’s mindful guiding.

A Sanctuary for Families

Families often arrive with layered emotions — hope, worry, exhaustion, longing.
At CDTC, they find:

  • A multilingual, deeply empathetic therapy team
  • A serene environment that naturally regulates the nervous system
  • Space for joy, curiosity, and relational growth
  • Guidance they can bring home and continue to build upon
  • A therapeutic process that feels human, not clinical
  • Experiential engagements for the whole family including siblings.

This center supports well-being for the whole family system.

A Message From My Heart to Theirs

As the workshop wrapped, I felt an overwhelming sense of alignment between our philosophies. Mindful communication isn’t just a technique — it’s a way of being with others. CDTC embodies that beautifully through every interaction, every shared glance, every moment of waiting for a child to initiate.

Growth happens not through perfection, but through presence.
Not through instruction, but through invitation.
Not through control, but through connection.

And in Curaçao, with the dolphins as our gentle co-guides, that truth feels especially alive.

This visit reminded me of something I’ve seen for more than two decades in this field:
When we slow down, share experience, and communicate mindfully, transformation begins.

CDTC is a shining example of what becomes possible when therapy embraces connection over correction—and does so in one of the most breathtaking settings imaginable.
